Dr. Shi founded and directs the research group “Polymer Therapeutics” at RWTH Aachen University Clinic. He currently leads projects from European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant) and German Research Foundation (DFG) as the Principal Investigator. He obtained a PhD degree from Utrecht University in 2014 on novel polymeric micelles for tumor-targeted drug delivery in the group of Wim Hennink. Shortly after PhD, he was appointed as Associate Professor at South China University of Technology and in 2016 as Group Leader at RWTH Aachen University Clinic. He has supervised 6 PhD and master students in Aachen. His research is recognized by several awards, e.g., Science Award (International Pharma Sciences Foundation/Rottendorf Stiftung), Theodore von Kármán Fellow, Rising Star (Symposium on Innovative Polymers for Controlled Delivery) and Merck Best On-Demand Talk Award (Controlled Release Society). Since 2021 he is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Nanobiotechnology. The main research topics of Dr. Shi’ group are:

1. Clinical translation of polymeric micelles for combination chemo-immunotherapy. He previously developed and patented the Π-Π-stacking-stabilized polymeric micelles which have shown convincing efficacy and safety in several preclinical models. Currently, the micelles are in development for clinical translation with financial support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

1. Enzyme-sensitive prodrug vesicles for immunotherapy and vaccination. Dr. Shi’ group developed the first enzyme-sensitive prodrug vesicles based on amphiphilic conjugates of polymers and prodrug derivatives of small molecule immunostimulants. The vesicles are highly efficient in activating antigen-presenting cells and are currently being developed for immunotherapy and vaccination.

1. Covalently self-assembled nanogels, microgel and hydrogels . His group recently established a novel covalent self-assembly strategy to construct highly tunable and multifunctional gel biomaterials at the nano- to macroscopic scale. These materials are used to deliver small molecule and macromolecular drugs, as well as to engineer tissues and organs.
