Yang Shi is currently Full Professor and Head of Department of Polymer Therapeutics at RWTH Aachen University Clinic. His department is focusing on engineering and understanding polymer-based therapeutic systems for chemotherapy, vaccination and immunotherapy. The research at the Department of Polymer Therapeutics has been funded by European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant) and German Research Foundation (DFG). Yang Shi obtained his PhD degree from Utrecht University in 2014 on polymeric micelles for tumor-targeted drug delivery. Shortly after PhD, he was appointed Associate Professor at South China University of Technology and in 2016 he relocated to Germany to start a new position as Group Leader. He has been serving as Associate Editor for Journal of Nanobiotechnology since 2021. He has received several academic awards, including the Theodore von Kármán Fellow, Science Award (International Pharma Sciences Foundation/Rottendorf Stiftung), Rising Star (Symposium on Innovative Polymers for Controlled Delivery) and Merck Best On-Demand Talk Award (Controlled Release Society).
His department is mainly working on three polymer therapeutic systems:
(I) Enzyme-degradable prodrug nanovesicles for vaccination and immunotherapy. The Department of Polymer Therapeutics designed polymer-prodrug conjugates to fabricate enzyme-degradable nanovesicles. The nanovesicles are highly efficient in engineering immune cell functions and are currently being developed for vaccination and immunotherapy.
(II) Covalently self-assembled nanogels, microgels and hydrogels. His department established a novel covalent crosslinking-driven self-assembly (COSA) to construct highly tunable and functional hydrogel biomaterials from nano- to macro-scale. These materials are employed to deliver molecular and cellular therapeutics, and to engineer functional tissues and organs.
(III) Polymeric micelles for translational cancer chemo-immunotherapy. A highly promising tumor-targeted drug delivery platform has been established based on Π-Π-stacking-stabilized polymeric micelles. The system has shown convincing efficacy and safety in mouse and human cancer models, and is currently under translational development to reach clinical stages.
