Wiltrud Lederle arbeitete als Doktorandin am Deutschen Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ) in Heidelberg und promovierte an der Universität Hohenheim. Von 2003 bis 2008 war sie als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin (Post-Doc) in verschiedenen Abteilungen des Deutschen Krebsforschungszentrums tätig. 2008 wechselte sie ans Institut für Experimentelle Molekulare Bildgebung der RTWH Aachen. Sie leitet die Arbeitsgruppe „Tumorprogression und Metastasierung“ und habilitierte sich 2019 an der Medizinischen Fakultät der RWTH Aachen. Ihre Forschung wird unter anderem von der DFG, dem BMBF und durch Industriekooperationen gefördert. Die Arbeitsgruppe untersucht als Hauptschwerpunkt den Einfluss der Mikroumgebung auf die Tumorprogression. Hierfür werden mit innovativen Bildgebungsverfahren die Tumorangiogenese, Immunantwort und Stroma-Aktivierung während der Tumorprogression untersucht und die Wirkmechanismen neuer therapeutischer Ansätze erforscht. Weitere Forschungsaktivitäten dienen der Untersuchung des stromalen Umbaus bei der Geweberegeneration und Entzündungsprozessen mit nichtinvasiver Bildgebung.
