Dr. Shi is leading the research group “Polymer Therapeutics” at RWTH Aachen University at the Institute for Experimental Molecular Imaging and the Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering. Before moving to Aachen, he obtained his PhD degree from Utrecht University (Netherlands) in 2014 on the development of a novel class of polymeric micelles for tumor-targeted drug delivery (thesis supervisor: Prof. Wim E. Hennink). Shortly after PhD, he was offered an Associate Professor position by South China University of Technology. In 2016, he was recruited back to Europe, with a Group Leader position from RWTH Aachen University. He has supervised 6 PhD and master students in Aachen. Since 2016, he has obtained 4 grants as the Principal Investigator, including from the German Research Foundation (DFG). His research has been recognized by several (inter)national and national awards, e.g., Science Award (International Pharma Sciences Foundation/Rottendorf Stiftung), Merck Best On-Demand Talk Award (Controlled Release Society), Theodore von Kármán Fellowship, and Rising Star (Symposium on Innovative Polymers for Controlled Delivery). Since 2021 he is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Nanobiotechnology (IF=10.4).

The main research topics of Dr. Shi’s group are:

  1. Clinical translation of polymeric micelle nanomedicines for combination chemo-immunotherapy.

    He previously developed and patented the Π-Π-stacking-stabilized polymeric micelles, which are based on a clinically relevant polymer and have shown convincing efficacy and safety in several preclinical models. With the support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the micelle formulation is in late preclinical development in preparation for the first study on human cancer patients.
  2. Self-assembled immuno-prodrug vesicles for immunoactivation.

    The research group "Polymer Therapeutics" developed the first immune prodrug vesicles, which were produced from amphiphilic conjugates of hydrophilic polymers and hydrophobic prodrugs of low molecular weight immunostimulants. The vesicles are highly efficient in activating antigen-presenting cells through enzyme-triggered intracellular drug release. The vesicles are currently being developed for cancer immunotherapy.
  3. Hydrogels, microgel scaffolds and nanogels based on methacrylamide polymers.

    His group recently developed a series of highly tunable and multifunctional hydrogels at nano- to macroscopic scales. These materials are used to deliver small molecule and / or macromolecular drugs via systemic or local routes of administration.
